midfielder Jorginho has prioritised signing a new contract at Stamford Bridge despite being heavily linked with a future move to , according to his agent. Jorginho will be allowed to leave Chelsea on a free transfer at the end of the season as things stand and could reportedly be targeted by Barcelona when the market reopens in January.
The 30-year-old will be able to sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club if he fails to extend his Chelsea stay by then, with Barcelona eager to take advantage of the situation as a result of their well-documented financial issues. However, agent Joao Santos has insisted that Jorginho’s main priority will be securing his long-term future in west London rather than angling for a move to Spain next year.

“We are due in June,” Santos told Tuttomercatoweb. “We prioritise Chelsea and we are moving towards it. Another priority for Jorginho is to do well with the national team.”

Santos fuelled rumours of Barcelona’s desire to land Jorginho when he was spotted in the Spanish city earlier this year, although his latest comments suggest that such a move is unlikely to come to fruition. He went on to admit that he may have spoken about Jorginho to Barcelona’s hierarchy during his visit but played down the importance of their conversations by explaining that he has other players to look out for.

Jorginho is reportedly hoping to sign a new and improved contract at Chelsea

“I work in football,” added Santos. “I have been to Barcelona, Madrid and Valencia but also in other parts such as Lyon. It’s work. I’m Jorginho’s agent, I may have talked about him but also about others.”

It remains to be seen whether Barcelona will eventually decide to firm up their interest in Jorginho with a formal approach as they look to find a suitable replacement for Sergio Busquets, who is widely expected to leave for the MLS at the end of the season. However, it seems as though the Catalan giants may be forced to look elsewhere if Jorginho refuses to entertain their advances in order to work on negotiating a new contract at Chelsea. The Italian midfielder is only tied down to Chelsea until the end of the season

The player himself recently underlined his desire to stay with the Blues by insisting that he is not yet thinking about joining another club in spite of the uncertainty surrounding his long-term future at Stamford Bridge.

“I feel very well here,” said Jorginho earlier this year. “Of course, I’d like to stay, there is a lot going on and we don’t know [what will happen]. I am here now, I have contract and I love to be here, I feel very well here so I don’t think about moving anywhere.

“For many years now [there is speculation]. Every single year! I don’t think like this, I just think about where I am and focus 100 per cent. I’m at Chelsea and I think about Chelsea 100 per cent.”
